A question we get a lot from customers is "How many smoke alarms do I need?". The answer is enough smoke alarms of the correct type to meet current Queensland legislation. Information about this legislation is available at https://www.qfes.qld.gov.au/prepare/fire/smoke-alarms. It came into effect at the start of 2017 and states that smoke alarms are to be installed in the following locations:

  • On each storey of the building

  • In each bedroom

  • Hallways that connect bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling

  • If there is no hallway, then the egress path to other parts of the storey

  • If there are no bedrooms on a storey then at least one smoke alarm in the most likely path of egress.

If a Property is leased, the landlord is responsible for ensuring the smoke alarms are up to current Queensland Legislation. If its a private home then the owner occupier has until 1 January 2027 to bring their dwelling up to this standard. This page from Voltex Electrical has some useful information for guidance on smoke alarm requirements for Queensland.

Queensland currently has some of the most most intense smoke alarm requirements in the country. Where a standard 4 bedroom home may have needed only 3 smoke alarms in the past they may now require 6 or more depending on the layout of the home. When you combine the number of smoke alarms needed with the different types of smoke alarm and options for the mandatory interconnection requirements its easy to see why customers ask.

On top of how many smoke alarms are required is measurements for locations where they can be placed and methods of power supply, be it 240V mains supply or 10 year battery back up. Also consider the need for carbon monoxide alarms if you utilise gas heating or appliances. Asking your electrician or smoke alarm tech for a professional opinion on what your home needs will help you to be protected and meet legislation.

Finally, what I consider to be most important is that the smoke alarms that are installed are good quality, reliable and most of all operational. Investing in an alarm with great warranty and a inbuilt 10 year battery will mean you have less nuisance alarms, won't need to replace the battery every year and have piece of mind that you home is protected.
